Women's Community Residence (WCR)

LRADAC's Women's Community Residence is a theraputic residential program designed with a secure, nurturing environment to prepare women in recovery from chemical dependency for community living.

The residence is located on three beautifully wooded acres in an immaculately refurbished turn-of-the-century home in West Columbia. The wrap-around front porch and fireplaces were restored to create a "homey" atmosphere that compliments the surrounding neighborhood. Two additional dorm wings consisting of three bedrooms with separate baths and a laundry area house up to 24 women.

The programs offer a research-based curriculum including daily Group Therapy, Trauma Curriculum, Stress Management, Health Education, Relapse Prevention, 12-Step Education, Medication Management, Family Education and Parenting Skills. A Woman's Journey

This program is for college women who are eager to learn more about themselves and the issues they may face during college and in the workforce. The information the participants will receive from guest presenters and knowledge they will obtain from interactive discussions will enhance their growth academically, personally and professionally. In addition, they will gain support from peer group members and develop skills needed to face life's challenges with confidence.

A Woman's Journey is typically offered in early Spring, with the program coordinator and college officials determining the frequency of the sessions (typically no more than six sessions per semester).

Program benefits include:

In Spring 2007, LRADAC developed a three-part series for A Woman's Journey examining the role of women in the media, as it relates to body image, health, safety, finances and relationships. "Overexposed: Women in the Media," focused on the media's depiction of how women should look and behave, and advertisers' roles in marketing alcohol, tobacco, exercise equipment and nutritional supplements to match this portrayal. The program also examined the role of women in various relationships. Positive images of women in the media were highlighted and participants discussed strategies for shaping the future of women in television, on the radio, in print and in movies.  Over 60 students at Columbia College participated in this program.
