Underage Drinking

Underage drinking is a serious public health issue. Tragically, underage drinking has many societal and human costs and consequences.

  • Alcohol kills 4,554 youth each year in the U.S. (12 youth a day) - CDC
  • Each day, more than 7,000 young people in the US under age 16 take their first rink - IOM, 2004
  • Most kids drink to get drunk; more than 90%of alcohol consumed by 12 to 20 years old is consumed when they are binging - IOM, 2004

Each of us has an opportunity to prevent underage drinking. There is a place at the table for all of us: parents, youth, schools, law enforcement, communities, colleges and universities, health care providers, the judicial and criminal justice system and others. By developing collaborations and networking activities we can reduce underage drinking in our community. By working together we can change social norms, reduce access and prevent and reduce underage drinking and its consequences.
