Project ALERT

Project ALERT is an evidence-based prevention program developed to motivate adolescents against drug use and help them acquire the skills they need to resist pro-drug pressures. The program is designed specifically for students in grades 6 – 8 and is implemented in middle schools. Project ALERT includes eleven one-hour sessions that focus on the following:

  • Understanding the consequences of drug use
  • Developing reasons not to use drugs
  • Establishing school-wide norms against drug use
  • Understanding the benefits of being drug-free
  • Recognizing that most people don’t use drugs
  • Identifying and countering pro-drug messages
  • Resisting advertising appeals
  • Resisting internal and social pressures
  • Working together
  • Communicating with parents
  • Supporting others in making non-use decisions
  • Recognizing alternatives to substance use
