Project ALERT
Project ALERT is an evidence-based prevention program developed to motivate adolescents against drug use and help them acquire the skills they need to resist pro-drug pressures. The program is designed specifically for students in grades 6 – 8 and is implemented in middle schools. Project ALERT includes eleven one-hour sessions that focus on the following:
- Understanding the consequences of drug use
- Developing reasons not to use drugs
- Establishing school-wide norms against drug use
- Understanding the benefits of being drug-free
- Recognizing that most people don’t use drugs
- Identifying and countering pro-drug messages
- Resisting advertising appeals
- Resisting internal and social pressures
- Working together
- Communicating with parents
- Supporting others in making non-use decisions
- Recognizing alternatives to substance use
