LRADAC brings together many segments of the community to develop and implement comprehensive plans to attack substance abuse. Innovative programs and initiatives impacting substance abuse in the Midlands have been recognized nationally. Specialized prevention programs have been developed to address the needs of elementary, middle and high school youth, parents and college- age adults.
The Community Services (Prevention) department develops and implements programs to reduce youth alcohol, tobacco and other drug use by addressing risk and protective factors. Risk factors are those factors that increase the likelihood of involvement with alcohol, tobacco and other drugs such as accessibility to these substances, poor family management, transitions and mobility. Protective factors reduce the likelihood of involvement with alcohol, tobacco and other drugs - examples include bonding with an individual or institution, and, strong community norms that are not favorable to use.
The Community Services department meets the needs of special populations by conducting needs assessments and evaluating where programs are needed. Special consideration is given to high-risk populations.
Consultation and training is available for school, neighborhoods, businesses, houses of faith, and community groups. Programs are developed on an ongoing basis to address the current public policy and public awareness issues surrounding the fight against addiction that faces our communities.
