"Who Can Help Me?"

Parenting Programs

Parenting programs are available for targeted groups of parents to address communication and relationship issues between parents and children. Parent groups also meet for educational or informational sessions.

Parent Power and Parenting Wisely are two programs currently available for targeted parent groups. Parent Power is an opportunity for parents to meet with parents of their children's friends to set curfews and party guidelines; exchange phone numbers and email addresses; discuss underage drinking policies, phone and internet usage; and encourage and support each other. Parenting Wisely is a CD-ROM based parenting curriculum.

Media literacy is another tool used to teach parents how to relate to their children. Parents learn about "pop culture" and develop skills to deconstruct television, radio, Internet and other media messages. As a result of the program, parents are able to look more critically at media messages. The programs help parents find ways to bridge the gap and begin to communicate with their children about risk-taking behavior.
