Clinical Trials Network

The Southern Consortium Node joined the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Clinical Trials Network (CTN) in January 2001, with the goal of forging partnerships to improve the quality of drug abuse treatment in our region and throughout the nation. The SC Node is a collaboration among the Regional Research and Training Center at The Medical University of South Carolina and eight affiliated community treatment programs in South Carolina.

LRADAC joined the NIDA Clinical Trials Network in December 2003 as one of the community treatment programs. Since its partnerships LRADAC has participated in the following research studies:

  • NIDA-CTN-0018 Reducing HIV/STD Risk Behaviors: A Research Study for Men in Drug Abuse Treatment (Enrollment Complete)
  • NIDA-CTN-0019 Reducing HIV/STD Risk Behaviors: A Research Study for Women in Drug Abuse Treatment (Enrollment Complete)
  • NIDA-CTN-0028 Osmotic Release Methylphenidate for ADHD in Adolescents with Substance Use Disorders (Enrollment Complete)
  • NIDA-CTN-0032 HIV Rapid Testing and Counseling in Drug Abuse Treatment Programs in the U.S. (Enrollment Complete)

Upcoming CTN Studies

LRADAC has been selected as a site for the upcoming CTN 0046: Smoking Cessation and Stimulant Treatment (S-CAST): Evaluation of the Impact of Concurrent Outpatient Smoking Cessation and Stimulant Treatment on Stimulant Dependence. Lead Investigator: Theresa Winhusen, Ph.D., University of Cincinnati.

The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the impact of smoking cessation treatment on drug abuse outcomes. The study will evaluate whether concurrent smoking cessation treatment improves, worsens, or had no effect on drug abuse outcomes in smokers who are in outpatient substance abuse treatment for cocaine or methamphetamine dependence. The study will begin for LRADAC in mid-2010.
